What is it about male Trekfen, including Yours Tuely, and making up starships? It must have started with Franz Joseph's Star Fleet Techinal Manual, with it's Transport/Tugs and it's Deadnought class starships. All with a list of names & registry numbers. So pretty......
This bit of fanish indulgence was inspired by the Bonaventure Class Starship, from a later ST geek document, the U.S.S. Enterprise Officers's Manual. The Bonaventure depicted resembles a Volkswagen version of the Enterprise; both it's main saucer and engineering sections couldn't have been more than four decks each, and it's overall length was around the lingth of the Enterprise' saucer section. It was kind of cute.
If the inspiration was a sort of VW Bug, then the MacGyver Class Starship is a custom hotrod/sports car. Both it's main saucer and engineering sections are five decks deep. The warp nacelles look just a tad too big.
The backstory is sort of American Chopper meets Starfleet, with a cup of "The Wackiest Ship In The Navy" thrown in for good measure.
I'm particularly fond of the dedications plaque inscriptions.

The MacGyver class starship is unique in Starfleet history for the number of rules it broke, precedence set, and it's very existence. In fact, it can hardly be called a class of ship, as only two (Mbuki-Mvuki and Travis Crabtree) are identical. The ships underwent no protracted design or test stage, were contructed from surplus and salvaged parts, and based on outdated warp technology. The enesis of the MacGyver class simply can not be summed up in the space of a few paragraphs; political climate, budget restrictions, regulation loop-holes, and internal politics among the Admiralty combined to make them not only possible, but perhaps inevitable.
Each ship was constructed in a third of the time it took to build other ships of it's size and class. The first interactive holodeck, using force field projections, was tested on these ships. The crews of this class boasted the highest integration of different planetary races, with less than 50% human and dozens of other Federation members serving alongside eachother. Ironically, in the process of installing the outdated warp drive, they discovered how to improve performance by as much as 23%. Such information would have been useful 30 years earlier.
All ships served time along the Romulan Neutral Zone and disputed territories, but most also became adept at star mapping and planetary surveying. The Ondinnok, Mbuki-Mvuki, and the Ho'oponopono were drafted into the diplomatic fleet.
Each ship is equipped with a shuttle landing bay, but two reinforced docking ports are where most of the ships shuttles come and go. Only one thing was designed expressly for this class; a rear docking, warp-capable shuttle. Later, the Remora I (unmanned) and Remora II (manned) probe shuttle, designed to attach almost anywhere, but usually beneath the engineering hull, were added. The docking ports are on each side of the docking bay. The Giesel has only one such docking port.

The world is too much with us
William Wordsworth
1770-1850
THE World is too much with us; late and soon,
Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers:
Little we see in Nature that is ours;
We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon!
This Sea that bares her bosom to the moon,
The winds that will be howling at all hours
And are up-gather'd now like sleeping flowers,
For this, for everything, we are out of tune;
It moves us not.—Great God! I'd rather be
A pagan suckled in a creed outworn,
So might I, standing on this pleasant lea,
Have glimpses that would make me less forlorn;
Have sight of Proteus rising from the sea;
Or hear old Triton blow his wreathèd horn.

William Wordsworth, born in Cockermouth, Cumberland. One of the great English poets, he was a leader of the romantic movement in England. What made him feel out of tune? The Industrial Revolution, perhaps? Today, we face the Technological Revolution and feel the same sense of a world that is "too much with us."

What fanish interests would the characters in our favorite fandoms have? Most people are "fans" of something, even if they won't admit or don't realize it.
And what if they all met at a con?
The Real Ghostbusters: Isn't Ray a fan of the "Murry the Mantis" cartoon? And I bet all of them watch Star Trek re-runs.
Beauty and the Beast: Yeah, we all know Vincent has read the classics. But no matter how Father frowned on them, I bet little Vincent had a secret stash of comic books. I can see him gleefully soaking up Captain Marvel and Tales From The Crypt. With times almost always tough for the Tunnels, Vincent might choose to visit a con Above if he found out how much some of his childhood memories were worth. "Cool costume! What's it from?"
Catherine? The first thing that poped into my mind was Pern.
Stargate SG-1: Daniel might find himself pulled into any academic panel discussion that might be at a con (Arthurian myth, Atlantis). He might also have to bite his tongue alot.
Sam probably watched a lot of MacGyver.
If any show were popular enough to have a fan base at SGC, Teal'c would probably be watching those fans. He strikes me as most likely to be familiar with the works of Joe Campbell and Henry Jenkins.
Wormhole Extreme would probably factor in somewhere.
Quantum Leap: I can't remember the name of the show, but Sam Beckett was a childhood fan of a TV time traveller.
And then there is Galaxy Quest....

Most of "the Strikeout of 2007" was over before I even knew about it.
A group called Warriors for Innocence claims to track sites promoting pedophilia, the
sexual abuse of minors, and other illegal activities. They pressured
LJ into taking down over 500 communities and personal journals. It
remains to be seen if any real pedophiles were taken down, but what
they mostly netted were those devoted to survivors of child abuse, and
fan fiction.
This did not go down well with online fandom. Check out Fanthropology for more detail than I can go into here.

A more recent Chanel #5 commercial, directed by Luc Besson. Music by Danny Elfman.
Chanel #5 commercial, circa 1982. This is where I got "I don't want to set the World on fire..." from. I really don't understand why it pushed my buttons the way it did. This is just possibly the most erotic television ad ever.
I supose I can't let the day go by without paying tribute to the anniversary of a film that changed my life; STAR WARS.

In a better universe I would be on my way to MediaWest*Con right now. But between having to change jobs, Greyhound's idiotic change in bus routes, and higher than usual confusion regarding room reservations, I opted out of attending this year.
MediaWest is something of an annual pilgrimage for me, this year being only the second time I've missed it in 26 years. So I am bummed out.
And now I'm concerned about next year. I asked my new employer how long I would have to work for paid vacation time. He replied, "We don't give hourly employees paid time off. We tried that once, but it was too much trouble." *sigh*

You may ask, "Why the hell didn't they atleast include the trailer on the DVD?" I can't answer that for certain, but rumor has it that Paramount (or whoever owns ST now) has lost the extra footage. They don't have them anymore. So the only reason we have this YouTube goodness is because somebody made an illegal copy of the trailer. God bless bootleggers.

I remember seeing this trailer at MediaWest*Con II. The banquet hall was packed, and I was standing just outside the doorway. When Shatner says "Here are some scenes from a picture we're all proud of" the fan standing next to me said "They couldn't say that about the first movie."
This was my first view of Saavik, and it was love at first sight.

I am an omnivorous fan, if it's SF,F or A I'll probably at least like it. But I don't have cable (lucky to have internet) so that mean I haven't seen enough of some shows I like very much, such as Highlander and Stargate SG1. I don't know the shows well enough to make use of the best possible angles.
I'm chewing over in my mind a short (God, I hope it stays short) multi-crossover with BtVS. Buffy & Faith would end up snatched off world by the Goa'uld. I need an intermediary for the Goa'uld, someone or something that wouldn't mind blowing away everyone around the Slayers just to get at them.
So far it would be BtVS/SG1/Highlander/The Crow, with probable hat tips to others.

From Phil Foglio at the Girl Genius Yahoo Group.
" Late on Saturday, Kaja had to be taken to the emergency room of our
local hospital. She was checked in and will be there for some time,
apparently.
"Kaja suffers from an ailment known as Chrohn's disease, which is an
inflammation of the digestive system and can be life threatening if it
is not treated.
Here is a link to a site that will tell you more than you ever wanted
to know about Chrohn's disease;
http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/p ubs/crohns/index.htm
"She had a similar attack around eleven years ago that almost killed
her, and resulted in major surgery, but she healed up, and there's
been no major problems until now.
"This time, we caught it pretty early, and she might be able to avoid
surgery by the simple method of being given a wide range of
experimental and quite powerful drugs. I'm talking about stuff that
the administering doctor has to get dressed up in protective clothing
for, so that they don't accidentally splash any on themselves. No
joke. She is hoping that she gets mutant abilities or at least a third
eye out of the deal, but we'll just have to see.
"The bottom line is SHE WILL BE FINE...eventually, but could easily be
in the hospital for several weeks.
"We will do our best to continue posting Girl Genius, but as Kaja has
to walk me through everything on the phone at this point, if she does
have to go in for surgery or if the drugs convince her that she can
only converse in Venusian, we may be out of luck.
"This was Kaja's idea, by the way, I was quite prepared to put up a "We
are experiencing Technical Difficulties" banner, but she insisted we
try to work through it, so I hope you appreciate it.
"Nothing would make her happier than to receive a 'get-well' card or
two. These can be sent to Studio Foglio. The kids and I will visit
her every day.
"Thanks for your support, and let's hope that she gets home soon, and
if she does get a mutant ability, it's something useful."
